Now. I want to describe the geography of your house as you have been carrying it.
There is a room. Somebody is unwell in it, and when people pray, that is what they pray about, and when you pray, that is what you pray about too. That room is where the spiritual event is happening. That is where God is understood to be working.
And then there is the corridor. That is where you live. That is where the laundry is carried, where the phone calls get made, where you stand for four seconds with your hand on the wall before you go back in.
And nobody has ever prayed about the corridor, including you. It is not a subject. It is the space between the things that matter.
Somebody wrote a line about the loading of an ordinary day
There is a verse in the sixty eighth Psalm that I would put on the wall of every corridor in every house like yours.
Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. (Psalm 68:19, King James Version)
Daily loadeth us. Every day, as a matter of routine, with no announcement and no occasion attached.
That is not a verse about a dramatic moment in a bedroom. It is a verse about an ordinary Tuesday, and the word daily is doing the work. A thing that happens daily is a thing that happens in the corridor, because the corridor is where most of a day takes place.
You are being loaded daily in the exact part of that house nobody prays about. Psalm 68:19 attaches the loading to every ordinary day rather than to any particular event, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves God out of the bedroom and into the whole house for somebody.
And notice that the loading is described as happening to us rather than being fetched by us. It is not a thing a person has to be in the right room to receive.
You have never once been standing outside the place where this happens. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with a person in the four seconds with a hand on a wall, and it is written that the loading is daily and comes toward us, which leaves no corridor unattended.
The geography you built, and what it costs
Let me be practical about it, because the map is doing real damage.
If the room is where God is, then the corridor is waiting. And a person who believes she is waiting stops expecting anything, stops asking for anything, and treats her own hours as a gap between the parts of life that count.
Months of that produces a very specific kind of tiredness, and it is not the physical kind. It is the tiredness of a person who has been living in a place she thinks is spiritually empty.
You are not in a gap, and no part of a house has ever once been outside the reach of the one who made it. Psalm 68:19 has the benefits arriving daily without reference to location, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a carer where she has actually been standing.
And there is a practical cost too. A woman who believes she is in the waiting part of the house does not pray for herself in it. She prays for the room, always, faithfully, and never once for the corridor or the person in it.
You were never meant to be the one person in that house nobody prays for, including you. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a carer to say her own name in her own prayers, and what is written loads the ordinary days rather than the exceptional ones.
The plain routing, and it reaches the corridor
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on an article for the one doing the nursing it points at her.
If something is happening right now in that room, that is 911, and it goes before everything else on this page. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, out there in the corridor, 988 answers, and a real person picks up, and it has always been for the one carrying the laundry as much as for the one in the bed. And if you have not been looked at yourself in a long time, that is a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today.
You are included in every line of that, and being the well one has never once taken anybody out of the routing. Psalm 68:19 loads the ordinary person on an ordinary day, which is exactly who is standing in that hallway, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a carer to make a call with her own name on it.
Say it plainly if you go. I am looking after somebody and nobody has looked at me in a long time. They hear that every week and they know what to do with it.
You have a sentence worth saying and it has never once been a small thing to say. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in an appointment that is about the carer, and what is written names a daily loading rather than an occasional rescue.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one woman standing in a hallway.
You are not outside anything, and the corridor has never once been the part of that house where God was not working. I am not consoling you. Psalm 68:19 says he daily loadeth us with benefits, which attaches the whole business to ordinary repeated days rather than to events, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who redraws a map somebody has been living inside for two years.
And this, which is the one I want left standing when the basket goes down:
You have been carried in the hallway every single time you carried somebody in that room. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in the four seconds with a hand on a wall, and what is written makes the loading daily and directs it at us, which includes the one nobody is praying for.
If you want one sentence to say standing in that hallway, say this one: I am being carried while I carry them, and the corridor is not outside the house of God.
Declare this over yourself
- Map that puts God in the bedroom and me in the corridor, you are not the geography of this house. Psalm 68:19 says he daily loadeth us with benefits, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get another year, in the name of Jesus.
- Habit of praying for that room and never for this hallway, you have no authority over my own mouth. The written word attaches the loading to ordinary days rather than to occasions, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished treating my own hours as the gap.
- Father, You load us daily, which is a word about Tuesdays and not about events. Your word says who daily loadeth us with benefits, so by Your Spirit I stand in that hallway today and say it out loud, and I ring somebody qualified about myself.
