The same words at the top of every page on this site, and they matter most on this one. This is not medicine. Now. I want to ask about the picture rather than about the belief.
Because if somebody asked you what you believe about God, you would give a good answer, and every word of it would be true and you would mean it.
But there is a picture that arrives when you pray, and it is not the same as the answer you would give. And the picture, lately, is a hand that is closed. Not a fist exactly. Closed, over a thing, deliberately, by somebody who has decided.
And so you still pray, and it has changed shape. It is the way a person knocks on a door they have already concluded is not going to open.
The verse answers the picture rather than the belief
There is a line at the end of the eighty fourth Psalm that goes straight at this, and the reason it is the right one is that it addresses the image and not the doctrine.
For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. (Psalm 84:11, King James Version)
No good thing will he withhold.
Withhold is the exact word. It is the word for a hand that has something in it and is choosing not to open, which is precisely the picture that has been arriving when you pray.
And the text does not argue with your theology. It goes to the picture and says the hand does not do that.
You have been praying to an image that has never once been accurate. Psalm 84:11 uses the withholding word specifically and denies it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who corrects a picture rather than a position.
I have to be careful here, and I will be. That verse is not a promise that you will receive the particular thing you have been asking for, and I am not going to use it that way. It says no good thing is withheld. It does not say that everything a person wants is being handed over on a schedule.
You were never promised the outcome, and the withholding has never once been the explanation for not having it. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a true sentence from being turned into a false one, and it is written that no good thing is withheld, which is a statement about His hand rather than about your situation.
Why the picture changed and what it costs
Let me say the practical half, because a changed picture does real damage and it does it quietly.
Nobody decides to start picturing God that way. What happens is that a long stretch with nothing in it needs explaining, and the mind reaches for the only two available options: either He cannot, or He will not.
Saying He cannot has never been possible in this house. So the picture drifted, over months, to the other one, and nobody was consulted about it, including you.
You are living with an image that arrived by default rather than by conviction. Psalm 84:11 sets the hand in the opposite position and does it in one word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person where a picture came from.
And the cost is specific. Prayer to a closed hand is a completely different activity. It gets shorter. It gets formal. And eventually it stops, not out of rebellion, but because nobody keeps knocking on a door they have concluded about.
You have not stopped believing, and the shortening of your praying has never once been the same as leaving. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a prayer that has got short, and what is written names the withholding and denies it without asking anybody to explain their circumstances first.
The plain routing, and nothing here is being withheld from you
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on this article it matters that it is available and ordinary.
If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and nobody on that line is deciding whether you deserve it. If the heavy thing today is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And whatever the situation is, it goes to a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today.
You are not being kept from anything on this page, and none of it has ever once been rationed. Psalm 84:11 denies the withholding in the plainest terms available, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person from a closed door in their head to an open one on a telephone.
There is something steadying in that, actually. The appointment is not a judgment on whether you have been walking uprightly. It is a Tuesday, and a room, and a person whose job it is.
You have somewhere to go today that has never once had a condition on the door. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in an ordinary appointment, and what is written puts the sun and the shield and the not withholding in one verse and leaves the reader's situation exactly where it is.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one person knocking on a door they have concluded about.
You are not praying to a closed hand, and there has never once been a hand closed over you. I am not promising you anything. Psalm 84:11 uses the exact word for holding something back and denies it outright, which addresses the picture rather than the argument, and it says nothing whatever about when or whether a particular thing arrives, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who corrects an image that drifted in over a year without anybody deciding on it.
And this, which is the one I want left standing when the step gets cold:
You have been dealt with by an open hand the entire time, and the openness has never once depended on what has arrived. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with somebody whose prayers have got short, and what is written names God a sun and a shield and denies the withholding in the same breath, without explaining anybody's year.
If you want one sentence to say on that step, say this one: This did not fail because of me, and the hand I have been picturing closed has never once been closed.
Declare this over yourself
- Picture of a hand closed over it, you are not accurate and you never were. Psalm 84:11 says no good thing will he withhold, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get one more of my prayers, in the name of Jesus.
- Drift that happened over a year without anybody deciding on it, you have no authority over how I pray. The written word names the withholding and denies it in the same word, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished knocking like a man who expects nothing.
- Father, You are called a sun and a shield, and You denied the withholding in the plainest word there is. Your word says no good thing will he withhold, so by Your Spirit I say both sentences out loud today, and I ring somebody qualified.
