The same words open every article on this site and they are the ones that matter most. This is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever stands in for a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If the one you are caring for has you worried, ring somebody qualified today. That is not drama. That is what love does.
Now. It happened on an ordinary evening over something tiny.
That is how it always goes. It was not the illness. It was a cup, or a question asked for the fourth time, or a remark about the television, and something in you went sharp and you heard your own voice from the outside and it sounded like somebody else's.
And then it was over in four seconds, and you have been carrying it for eleven days.
You have replayed it. You have apologized twice more than was needed, which made it worse. And somewhere in there it stopped being a thing that happened and became a fact about your character, and that is the part I want to get at.
He is described as knowing what we are made of
There is a line in the psalm about pity, and the reason it is the right verse is that it names the mechanism and not just the mood.
Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. (Psalm 103:13, King James Version)
He knoweth our frame. That is an engineering sentence. It means the load ratings are known, the materials are known, and nothing about what happened on that ordinary evening came as news.
You did not surprise Him. He built the thing that snapped and He knows exactly what it is rated for.
You are fully known by somebody who has never once been shocked by what a tired person says. Psalm 103:13 puts the pity and the knowledge of our frame in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a carer stop waiting to be found out.
And notice the word pity in that verse is not condescending. It is the pity of a father who knows how small a child is. It is not disappointment managed politely. It is affection that has the facts.
You have been afraid of a disappointment that has never once existed in that quarter. The Spirit of God is the one who tells a person the truth about how they are seen, and it is written that He remembereth that we are dust, which is a sentence about material rather than about failure.
The anger is information, and it has been ignored
Let me say something practical, and I am saying it as somebody who has snapped in a sick house more than once.
That sharpness did not come from nowhere and it is not a moral event. It is what a person sounds like when they have been running with nothing left for a long time and have not told anybody.
So it is information. It is the same kind of information as a warning light, and the mistake almost everybody makes is to spend all the energy on the shame and none of it on the reading.
You are looking at a signal rather than a sin, and the sharpness has never once been the real problem. Psalm 103:13 frames the whole thing in terms of what a frame can bear, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a private shame into a piece of usable information.
And the shame has a specific cost. A person who is ashamed of snapping becomes careful, and a careful carer is a quiet carer, and a quiet carer stops saying anything real in that room at all.
You were never meant to be careful in there, and no sick room has ever once been helped by a person walking on eggshells in it. The Spirit of God is the one who lets somebody be ordinary in a room again, and what is written puts pity where a person expects an assessment.
The plain routing, and this is the reading of the signal
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and it is the practical answer to what happened on that ordinary evening.
If something is happening right now with the person you look after, that is 911, and it is before anything else here. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up, and that is for the one in the hallway as much as the one in the bed. And if you have been running empty long enough to snap, that goes to a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist too, described plainly, as something happening to you.
You are permitted to bring your own state to somebody trained, and it has never once been a lesser reason to go. Psalm 103:13 speaks about the frame of the person doing the fearing rather than about their performance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a carer to describe herself out loud.
Say the real sentence when you ring. I have been doing this on my own for months and I lost my temper with somebody I love. That is not a confession. It is a description of a load.
You have a plain sentence available and it has never once needed to be a confession. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a phone call about a carer rather than a patient, and what is written keeps the pity and the knowing of the frame in the same sentence.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one person who is still replaying four seconds.
You are not a bad person, and one sharp sentence has never once been the sum of a year of getting up in the night. I am not letting you off. Psalm 103:13 puts pity and the knowledge of our frame in a single sentence, which means what happened that evening was known about before it happened and was not a discovery, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a verdict off somebody who has been prosecuting herself for days.
And this, which is the one I want left standing:
You are pitied in the old sense, by somebody who has the facts and has never once needed you to be better than dust. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with a carer who is ashamed of four seconds, and what is written remembers our frame on purpose and says so in the same breath as the pity.
If you want one sentence to say before you go back in, say this one: I am being carried while I carry them, and one sharp sentence is not the sum of a year.
Declare this over yourself
- Four seconds I keep replaying, you are not my character and you never were. Psalm 103:13 says he knoweth our frame and he remembereth that we are dust, so by the Holy Spirit you do not sentence me, in the name of Jesus.
- Performance of extra gentleness, you have no place in that room. The written word puts the pity beside the knowing rather than beside a standard, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished walking on eggshells in my own house.
- Father, You pity the way a father pities, with all the facts in hand. Your word says he remembereth that we are dust, so by Your Spirit I say sorry once today and then stop, and I ring somebody qualified about myself.
