Now. Somebody in that family said the sentence again this week.
Well, you have got it covered. Or: honestly, you are amazing with all this. Or the worst one, the one that closes every door at once: we do not know how you do it.
And they mean it warmly. That is the trap. Every one of those sentences is a compliment, and every one of them is also a decision, made out loud, that nothing further is required from anybody.
And the hardest part is that they are not wrong about the evidence. You are good at this. You have been running it for months and it has not fallen over. Nobody in that family has seen it fail, because you have not let it, and now the reputation is the wall.
He said it plainly and nobody thought less of him
There is a moment in Numbers where a man who was doing an enormous job turns around and says the sentence out loud, and I want you to see how directly he says it.
I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. (Numbers 11:14, King James Version)
No hedging. He does not say it is quite a lot at the moment. He does not say he is fine but it would be nice if somebody helped.
I am not able. It is too heavy for me. Said by somebody whose competence nobody in that camp doubted, and the account does not treat it as a collapse. It treats it as information, and the answer to it is seventy men appointed to share the load.
You are permitted to say the plain sentence, and it has never once cost anybody their standing. Numbers 11:14 has a capable man state his limit in the flattest possible words, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a competent person to admit a limit out loud.
That is the model I would put in front of you. Not a breakdown. Not a scene at a family lunch. One flat sentence, said once, to somebody who can act on it.
You have a sentence available that has never once required a crisis to precede it. The Spirit of God is the one who gives a capable person the words for a limit, and it is written that the admission came before the help and not after the collapse.
The reputation is doing the work of a lie
Let me say the practical half, because it is uncomfortable and it is true.
Every time that sentence gets said and the answer is a shrug and a smile, that is a small deposit into a story about one person's capacity. Six months of that and the story has become a fact in that family, and facts are very hard to argue with.
And the family is not being lazy. They are acting on the best information they have, and the best information they have came from you.
You are living inside a reputation you have been maintaining daily, and no family has ever once been able to see past one that is well kept. Numbers 11:14 has the correction come from the man himself rather than from an observant crowd, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person which wall they built.
And the good news in that is that it can be corrected from the same place. Nobody else needs to notice. One sentence, said once, plainly, and the whole structure has a door in it.
You were the one who built this and you have never once been prevented from saying so. The Spirit of God is the one who turns a reputation back into a conversation, and what is written puts the plain admission in the mouth of the one carrying it.
The plain routing, and one call is about you
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on an article for carers it faces both ways.
If something is happening right now with the person you look after, that is 911, and it goes before all of this. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up, and that number is for the competent one in the family as much as for anybody. And if you have not been seen yourself in a long time, that is a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today.
You are included in that routing, and being the one who copes has never once excluded anybody from it. Numbers 11:14 names the carrier as somebody who has a limit worth reporting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a capable person be the subject of a phone call.
Say the plain version when you ring. I am looking after somebody on my own and I am running out. That sentence does not sound dramatic to them. It sounds like information.
You have a description that has never once needed to be worked up into a crisis to be taken seriously. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a flat conversation about a limit, and what is written records the words I am not able without one syllable of apology.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one woman everybody thinks has it covered.
You are not failing by saying you cannot do this alone, and the sentence has never once been a confession of anything. I am not undermining you. Numbers 11:14 has a man carrying an enormous responsibility state in the flattest words available that it is too heavy for him, and the answer is help rather than correction, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who gives a competent person permission to be plain.
And this, which is the one I want left standing when they all go home:
You have been carried through all eleven of those months by somebody who has never once needed you to look like you were coping. The Spirit of God is the one who attends to the one everybody assumes is fine, and what is written puts I am not able into the record without a word of embarrassment attached.
If you want one sentence to say before they arrive, say this one: I am being carried while I carry them, and saying I cannot do this alone is not a failure of anything.
Declare this over yourself
- Reputation I built and have been maintaining daily, you are not the truth and you are not my job. Numbers 11:14 has a capable man say I am not able, so by the Holy Spirit you do not stand between me and my own family, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that saying it sounds like an accusation, you have no authority at that table. The written word puts the plain admission in the mouth of the one carrying it and answers it with help, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished shrugging while people compliment me.
- Father, You let a man say it is too heavy for me and You sent seventy others rather than a rebuke. Your word says I am not able to bear all this people alone, so by Your Spirit I say it flat today to one of them, and I ring somebody qualified about myself.
