Every page on this site opens with the same sentence and I am glad it does. This is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing on this page is treatment, and nothing here ever stands in for a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If this is where you are, the useful part of this page is the phone call. Please do not leave it until the end.
Now. Do you remember the first week?
The messages. The food. Three people offering to drive you places. Somebody's mother sending something. A whole group of people arranging themselves around you in a way that was genuinely moving.
And then week two, which was quieter. And week five, which was quiet. And now it is whatever week this is, and there is nothing, and the awful thing is that you cannot even be angry about it, because everybody behaved perfectly reasonably. They asked. You said the same thing three times. There was nothing new to say and so eventually there was nothing to ask.
Nobody did anything wrong, and you are alone anyway, which is a particularly lonely combination.
He says the sentence and then says who was looking
There is a psalm written from a cave that contains one of the bluntest lines about loneliness in the book, and the verse right around it is what makes it bearable.
I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. (Psalm 142:4, King James Version)
That is not a tidy sentence and nobody softened it. No man cared for my soul. It is stated as a fact about his situation rather than as a complaint to be corrected.
And the psalm does not answer it by telling him he is wrong about the facts. It answers it by saying that when his spirit was overwhelmed, there was one who knew his path.
You are known by somebody whose knowing has never once depended on being updated. Psalm 142:4 has the loneliness stated plainly and answered with a knowing rather than with a correction, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person company in a week when nobody has asked.
That distinction matters. Nobody in that passage tells the man he has friends really. The comfort offered is not a denial of the situation. It is the presence of one who did not need a message thread to stay current.
You have been accompanied through every quiet week, and the quiet has never once been the same as being forgotten. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a house nobody has called, and it is written that his path was known at the exact moment his spirit was overwhelmed within him.
What actually happened to your friends
Let me say the practical half, because I think the story that gets built in a quiet house is harsher than the truth.
Here is what happens in a group of people around a long illness. The first weeks have news in them, and news is easy to respond to. A long stretch has no news, and most people genuinely do not know how to ask about a thing that has no updates.
So they do not stop caring. They stop knowing what to say, which looks identical from where you are sitting.
You are reading a silence that has never once meant what you have decided it means. Psalm 142:4 has a man state his isolation accurately and still be wrong about being unknown, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps somebody from writing a final verdict on their own friends.
And there is one thing that changes it, and it is not fair, and I am going to say it anyway: it usually has to come from you. Not because anybody owes it. Because nobody else in that group knows how to start that conversation.
You have a sentence available that no one else in that group can say. The Spirit of God is the one who gets somebody to send a message they should not have to send, and what is written has a man speak his own situation out loud rather than wait to be asked about it.
The plain routing, which does not depend on anybody else
Here is the section that is not comfort, and it is the reason this page exists.
If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and it needs nobody else's attention first. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up, and it is worth knowing that on a night when nobody has messaged. And whatever has been going on this long goes to a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today.
You are able to get attention from somebody whose job it is, and that has never once depended on whether your friends are asking. Psalm 142:4 has a man appeal upward when the people around him have gone quiet, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves somebody from waiting to acting.
That is the part of this nobody can fail you on. A clinic does not lose interest after week three. That is a thing friendships do and workplaces do, and it is not a thing that happens in a room with somebody trained in it.
You have a door that has never once gone quiet on anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a person making a call with nobody cheering them on, and what is written answers an honest report of loneliness with a knowing that was already in place.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one person nobody has messaged this week.
You are not forgotten, and the silence around you has never once been a measurement of what anybody thinks of you. I am not flattering your friends. Psalm 142:4 lets a man say no man cared for my soul without correcting him, and then answers it with one who knew his path when his spirit was overwhelmed, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who sits with somebody in the week nobody called.
And this, which is the one I want left standing when the phone stays quiet:
You have been known through every week that had no news in it, and the knowing has never once required a report. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a quiet house on an ordinary evening, and what is written puts the honest sentence about loneliness and the answer about being known within a few lines of each other.
If you want one sentence to keep for tonight, keep this one: This counts, and being no longer asked about is not the same as being no longer known.
Declare this over yourself
- Silence in my phone, you are not a verdict on what anybody thinks of me. Psalm 142:4 lets a man say it plainly and answers him with one who knew his path, so by the Holy Spirit you do not name my friends, in the name of Jesus.
- Story that they have all moved on, you have no standing in this house. The written word has the loneliness spoken and the knowing given in the same passage, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished reading not knowing what to say as not caring.
- Father, You knew the path while the man in the cave was saying nobody did. Your word says no man cared for my soul, and You did not correct him, You knew him, so by Your Spirit I send the true message today, and I ring somebody qualified.
