The same words open every page on this site, and they are the ones that matter. This is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing on this page is treatment, and nothing I write ever stands in the place of a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If the reason you keep dropping has never been looked at by anybody qualified, ring them today, ahead of everything else on this page.
Now. Tell me when you last rested.
And what comes back, if you are honest, is not a rest. It is a collapse. The weekend you lost. The Tuesday you did not get up. The thing that happened after the wedding where you slept for eleven hours and everybody said you clearly needed it.
Those are the only stops you have, and they are all the same shape: something ran out and the body took the decision out of your hands.
And because those are the only ones, you have come to believe something about rest that is not true. You have come to believe it is a thing that happens to a person, like weather, rather than a thing a person does.
He was asleep under a tree and got fed twice
There is a scene with Elijah that is one of the most physical passages in the book, and the first thing to notice is where the story begins.
And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. (1 Kings 19:5, King James Version)
He is asleep under a tree. This is not a rest he chose. He has run out completely, said out loud that he has had enough, and dropped.
And what happens to him there is not a rebuke. It is a touch on the shoulder, food, and permission to lie back down, and then the whole thing again, because once was not enough.
You are looked after in the collapse and nobody has ever once been scolded for arriving there. First Kings 19:5 has the answer to a man at the end of himself be an angel and a meal rather than a correction, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the shame out of a person's own collapsing.
But there is a second thing in that passage and I do not want it missed. What he is given is deliberately physical and unremarkable. Food, sleep, and then more of both. Nobody makes him get up and be useful.
You have never once been asked to justify a stop. The Spirit of God is the one who gives ordinary things to a person who expected a rebuke, and it is written that the angel came twice, because the journey was too great, which is a sentence about load rather than about character.
The reason chosen rest feels impossible
Let me say the practical half, because this is the part I think nobody has explained to you.
Rest that gets chosen requires one thing that collapse does not: it requires you to stop while you still have something left. And that feels, from inside your life, like stopping early. Like leaving something on the table.
So there is no moment that ever qualifies. There is no point in a day where you have done enough to earn the lying down, because the standard is an empty tank, and an empty tank means it is not a choice any more.
You are using a threshold that guarantees you will never once reach it on purpose. First Kings 19:5 has the rest given before anything was fixed or finished, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person the shape of the trap they are inside.
And the cost of only ever collapsing is not only the tiredness. It is that every stop you have ever had is associated with failure, so rest itself has become something that tastes of having let everybody down.
You were never meant to learn rest that way, and no collapse has ever once been a good teacher of it. The Spirit of God is the one who separates rest from failure in a person's memory, and what is written puts a meal and a sleep in front of a man before anything about his situation had changed.
The plain routing, and it comes first
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on an article about collapsing it goes ahead of everything else.
If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and it is not a rest question. If the heavy thing today is in your own mind, and especially if the collapses have got darker than tiredness, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And if the dropping itself has never been looked at by anybody qualified, ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, before you plan any rest at all.
You are permitted to describe the collapsing to somebody trained, and it has never once been too ordinary to mention. First Kings 19:5 has somebody else come to the man rather than the man being expected to sort himself out, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person from enduring to reporting.
I want to be clear about the middle one. If what happens when you drop includes not wanting to get up at all, tell somebody today. That is not tiredness and it is not a subject for a page like this.
You have a number and a door and neither has ever once been for somebody else only. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with somebody making a call about a pattern rather than an emergency, and what is written sends help to a man who had asked for none.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one woman who has only ever collapsed.
You are allowed to stop with something still in the tank, and nobody has ever once required you to be empty first. I am not being soft with you. First Kings 19:5 has an exhausted man under a tree met with a touch, a meal and permission to lie back down, and the whole answer is physical and repeated and carries no rebuke in it anywhere, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who breaks a rule a person has kept their whole adult life.
And this, which is the one I want left standing:
You have been attended to in every collapse, and the attending has never once been a comment on how you got there. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with somebody asleep at the end of themselves, and what is written has the angel come a second time because the journey was too great, which puts the difficulty on the road rather than on the traveler.
If you want one sentence to say when you lie down, say this one: I am allowed to lie down, and I do not have to run out first to be allowed to stop.
Declare this over yourself
- Rule that says I have to be empty first, you are not a standard and you never came from anywhere good. First Kings 19:5 gives a man food and sleep before anything had changed, so by the Holy Spirit you do not decide when I lie down, in the name of Jesus.
- Guilt that arrives nine minutes in, you have no authority over this afternoon. The written word sends an angel to a man who had asked for nothing and earned nothing, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished learning rest from collapse.
- Father, You met a man at the end of himself with a meal and a touch and no correction at all. Your word says an angel touched him and said arise and eat, so by Your Spirit I stop today while I still have something left, and I ring somebody qualified about the dropping.
1 Kings 19:5
