Same opening as every page on this site, and it is the sentence I would keep if I had to lose the rest. This is not medicine. I am not a doctor, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever stands in for a nurse, a pharmacist or a clinic. If any of what follows describes you, the useful part is the phone call at the end. Go and make it early.
Now. A quick test, and answer it honestly because nobody is watching.
If somebody rang your house today and asked how you actually are, is there a single person in it who could give an accurate answer?
Your wife would say fine. Your kids would say fine. Your brother, if he got the call, would probably say you had been a bit run down in the spring.
And every one of them would be reporting in good faith, because every one of them is repeating what you told them.
Which means there is now a household with nobody in it who knows, and the loneliest part is that it was built by a man who thought he was being considerate.
Somebody was never taking your word for it
There is a psalm that opens with a sentence people read as comforting or as uncomfortable depending on what they are carrying, and for a man in your position it is the best news on the page.
O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. (Psalm 139:1, King James Version)
Searched. Not been told. Not informed by the man himself and then filed the report.
That is a completely different mechanism from the one operating in your kitchen. Everybody in your house has a description of you that came from you. There is one who has a description that did not.
You are already known by somebody who never once needed your account of it. Psalm 139:1 has the knowing come from searching rather than from reporting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man stop performing in front of the only one who was never fooled.
That is either the most frightening sentence in the Bible or the most restful one, and for a man who has been managing everybody's information for a year, it is restful. There is one conversation you do not have to prepare for.
You have somewhere to stop, and the stopping has never once required you to explain yourself first. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with a man who has run out of performance, and it is written that the searching came before any of the telling.
The cost is not landing on you alone
Let me say the harder half, because I have been the man in the truck and somebody needed to say this to me.
You think the arrangement protects them. It does not. It moves the cost around and it makes the cost worse.
Because the people in that house are not stupid. They have noticed something. They have noticed you going to bed early, or going quiet, or the thing you stopped doing in March. And they have your word against their own eyes, and they cannot act on either.
So they are not spared anything. They are given a low, permanent, unresolvable worry with no permission to say it out loud, because you closed the subject every time it opened.
You are not sparing anybody, and the arrangement has never once been the kindness it felt like from inside. Psalm 139:1 shows what it is to be genuinely known rather than accurately reported, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man what his household has actually been carrying.
And they cannot fix it, because the one thing needed to change it is a sentence only you can say.
You were never a burden in that house, and being seen has never once been the same as being a weight. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a man to say the true thing in his own kitchen, and what is written has a man address the one who already knew and not flinch from it.
The plain routing, which is where the sentence actually goes
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on this article it is the assignment.
If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and it goes before anything else on this page. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And the thing you have been describing as fine since the spring goes to a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, described accurately, with the length of it included.
You are allowed to give somebody a description that has not been edited first. Psalm 139:1 has a man speak to one who already had the accurate version, which is the practice run for saying it to anybody else, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a man from managing to reporting.
Say it once in the house and once on the phone. The house one is harder and the phone one is the one that matters.
You have two conversations in front of you and neither one has ever once needed to be well phrased. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man through the worse of the two, and what is written begins with a man acknowledging a knowledge that was never based on his own account.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one man who has closed every conversation.
You are not a liar, and the year of saying fine has never once made you one. I am not letting you off. Psalm 139:1 says thou hast searched me and known me, which describes a knowledge that never once depended on the man's own report, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who lets somebody stop managing a room he was never asked to manage.
And this, which is the sentence I want left standing when the truck door shuts:
You have been fully known the whole time, and the knowing has never once been waiting on you to describe it. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with a man who has just run out of performance, and what is written puts the searching first and the speaking second, which is the right way round.
If you want one sentence to say before you go in, say this one: This counts, and there is one who has known the whole time without being told.
Declare this over yourself
- Word fine, you are not an accurate account of this year and you never were. Psalm 139:1 says thou hast searched me and known me, so by the Holy Spirit you do not close one more conversation in my house, in the name of Jesus.
- Idea that silence is protecting my household, you have no standing in my kitchen. The written word describes a knowing that never depended on my own report, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished managing what people are allowed to know.
- Father, You searched me out and You never once needed my version of it. Your word says thou hast searched me and known me, so by Your Spirit I say the true answer in this house today, and I ring somebody qualified.
