Give Me a Job I Can Do

Before anything else, and I will say it on every page I write here: this is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing on this site is treatment, and nothing on this page should ever stand in place of a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If you are worried about somebody in your house, get them seen. That is the strong move and not the timid one.

Now. Somebody in your house is unwell, and the last hour has been spent being extremely helpful at a volume nobody asked for.

The shelf by the sink got reorganized. There was a trip out for something nobody needed. There was a third round of standing in the doorway asking whether there was anything to get, and the same small tired no came back, and now the hall again.

I know exactly what that is, because it is mine. It is not fussing. It is a man hunting for a job with an end on it, because a job with an end on it is the only shape of usefulness he has ever been handed.

The instruction is to carry, not to finish

There is a line in Paul that gets read at every men's breakfast in the country, and the thing it actually says is nearly the opposite of the way it gets used.

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2, King James Version)

Bear. Not solve. Not clear. Not complete by Thursday and report back. The word is the one for picking a thing up and walking with it still on your shoulder, and the whole law of Christ is said to be fulfilled by men who never once put the load down finished.

You are keeping the law of Christ in that hallway, and carrying has never once counted for less than fixing. Galatians 6:2 asks for the bearing and says nothing at all about the finishing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man take that as an actual answer rather than as a consolation.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A burden that gets cleared was a task. A burden that gets carried is a person. Nobody in that bedroom needs a contractor. They need somebody who does not leave when the job has no end date on it.

You were built for this and not only for the visible kind of work, and the passage has never once graded a man on his completions. The Spirit of God is the one who settles a restless man into a chair, and what is written gives the bearing itself as the fulfilling, with nothing held back until the load comes off.

The loud helping is fear with a hammer in its hand

Let me say the honest part, because I have done it and I recognize it from the inside.

The reorganizing, the going out for things, the announcing. It looks like service. Some of it is. But a lot of it is a man converting a feeling he cannot stand into motion, because the feeling is helplessness and the motion is the only tool in the box.

And the cost of it lands on the person in the bed. They now have to manage your morale on top of everything else. They say they are fine. They say it is nothing. They say that because the third round of asking has quietly made them responsible for your peace of mind.

You are permitted to be helpless in that room without converting it into noise, and God has never once required a man to be comfortable in order to be present. Galatians 6:2 puts the weight on the one who carries and not on the one being carried, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man sit inside a feeling instead of working it off.

I am not scolding. I am handing over the one thing that changed it for me: the asking is for me, and the doing is for them. Once that landed I stopped asking and started bringing.

You have been given a way to serve that does not need permission first, and no household has ever once been harmed by a warm drink arriving unannounced. What is written asks for the burden to be taken up rather than negotiated over, and the Spirit of God is the one who turns a hovering man into a useful one.

The plain routing, which is the other half of the job

There is one part of this page that is not comfort, and here it is, because a page about staying is exactly where a man could hear me telling him to handle it himself.

If something frightening is happening right now, you call 911, and you do it before you finish this page. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers and a real person picks up. And if anything in that bedroom has been going on and nobody qualified has looked at it, then the job with an end on it is this one: you ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist, and you book the appointment.

You are doing the strongest available thing when you hand a person over to somebody trained. Galatians 6:2 has burdens carried inside a body of people with different hands in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a man from confusing loyalty with doing it all himself.

That call is a real task with a real ending, and it is the only one on this page. Everything else is bearing.

You have one job with an end on it and one without, and the passage has never once made a man choose between them. The Spirit of God is the one who gets somebody as far as the phone, and what is written makes carrying a shared work rather than a solitary one.
