Nobody Takes the Next Shift

The same words at the top of every page here, and they are the most useful thing on it. This is not medicine. I am not a doctor or a nurse, nothing on this page is treatment, and nothing here ever stands in for a clinic or a pharmacist. If the one you look after has you worried, ring somebody qualified today. That is not overreacting. That is the first right move.

Now. When were you last relieved?

Not a gap. Not an hour when they were asleep and you were still listening. Relieved, in the proper sense, where somebody else took it and you were genuinely off.

If the honest answer is that it has not happened, then there is a second question underneath it that almost nobody asks, and it is the more interesting one.

What would you actually do with the hour?

Because I have watched a lot of people be handed an hour and find themselves standing in a parking lot not knowing what to do with it. The handing over is a skill and nobody taught it to you, and the not knowing is not ingratitude. It is what happens to a person who has been on continuously for months.

Two men held the arms up, and that was the whole job

There is a scene in Exodus that I love for how physical it is, and how unspiritual the solution looks.

But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. (Exodus 17:12, King James Version)

Read what they actually do. They find a rock. They sit him on it. And then two men stand either side and hold his arms up, physically, for hours.

That is not a word of encouragement and it is not a prayer. It is furniture and manual labor, and the account treats it as the answer.

You are describing a need that has always had a physical answer, and the answer has never once been a sentiment. Exodus 17:12 solves an impossible situation with a stone and two pairs of hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a carer ask for something concrete rather than for sympathy.

And notice that Moses does not stop being the one doing the thing. He is still there, arms still up, still the man at the top of that hill. Being held up is not the same as being replaced.

You have never once been in danger of being replaced by the people holding you up. The Spirit of God is the one who separates being helped from being set aside, and it is written that the hands stayed up rather than came down, which is the whole point of the arrangement.

Ask for something with edges on it

Let me be practical, because on this page the practical part is the whole of it.

The reason nobody relieves you is very rarely that nobody would. It is almost always that nobody knows what to offer, and the general offer is impossible to accept. Let me know if you need anything is a sentence that cannot be actioned by a tired person, because accepting it requires inventing the job first.

So the fix is to hand somebody a job with edges. Thursday, two till four, sit with her, I will be out.

You are able to make that easy for somebody, and making it easy has never once been the same as imposing. Exodus 17:12 has a task so specific that it names which side each man stood on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a vague offer into a named hour.

And then the second half, which is the one people get wrong. Decide before the hour what you are going to do with it. Not something improving. Something ordinary. Sit in a parking lot with a drink. Drive somewhere pointless. Go and stand in a shop.

You were never going to know what to do with an hour that arrived unplanned, and no carer has ever once been able to improvise one. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a person to plan a small ordinary thing, and what is written provides a stone before anything else, because a man needed somewhere to sit.

The plain routing, and one of these is your hour

Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on an article for carers it faces both ways.

If something is happening right now with the person you look after, that is 911, and it comes before every other line here. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up, and it is for the one at the top of the hill as much as for anybody. And if you have not been seen in a long time, use the first relieved hour you get to ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist.

You are permitted to spend the first hour somebody gives you on yourself. Exodus 17:12 puts a stone under the man before it does anything else, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a carer receive something practical without paying for it.

That is the best use of a first hour I know. Not because rest is unimportant, but because the call is the thing that never gets made otherwise.

You have one hour and one call and they have never once needed to be two separate weeks. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in an hour somebody else made possible, and what is written has two men do an entirely physical thing so that a third could keep going.
