The same sentence opens every page on this site, and I will never get tired of writing it. This is not medicine. I have no clinical training, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page belongs anywhere near where a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist stands. If somebody in your house has you worried, get them seen, and get them seen soon. That is not fussing. That is care with its eyes open.
Now. There is somebody unwell in your house, and I want to ask you about the room.
Not about them. About the room. The temperature of it. The light. Whether the door is open or closed. Whether there is something to look at other than a ceiling. Whether the noise from the rest of the house arrives in there as company or as pressure.
Because my guess is that you have been running yourself into the ground over the things you cannot do, and paying almost no attention at all to the one thing that has been in your hands the whole time.
He is described as somebody who arranges a place
The psalm everybody knows by heart has a line in it that is easy to read past, and it is a line about a setting rather than about a rescue.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. (Psalm 23:2, King James Version)
He makes a place to lie down in. He leads to water that is still rather than water that is moving. Both of those are descriptions of conditions, chosen on purpose, by somebody paying close attention to what a tired creature can actually manage.
That is a shepherd arranging a room.
You are doing something the shepherd Himself is described as doing, and arranging a place has never once been the lesser half of care. Psalm 23:2 has the green pasture and the still water named as the work rather than as the backdrop, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a tired person see their own house in that line.
I love that the water is specified as still. Any water would keep a sheep alive. Still water is the difference between drinking and being frightened while you drink, and somebody thought about it.
You have been thinking about the still water all week without calling it anything. The Spirit of God is the one who names a work that nobody in the house has noticed, and it is written that He leadeth beside waters chosen for what they are like rather than for what they contain.
What a room can and cannot do
Let me be exact here, because on this site exactness is the whole point.
A warm room does not treat anything. A quiet room does not make anybody better. The light being right does not change what is happening in a body, and I am not going to suggest for one second that it does.
What a room does is decide what a person has to spend their energy on. A cold room takes something. A bright light at the wrong hour takes something. A television nobody is watching takes something. A person lying there using what little they have on the conditions around them has that much less for everything else.
You are lowering the cost of the day for somebody, and that has never once been nothing even though it treats nothing. Psalm 23:2 has the conditions chosen deliberately by the one doing the leading, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person value a work that leaves no visible result.
And the other half, which matters more: a room is the one thing in this whole situation that is genuinely, fully, in your hands.
You were given the one part of this you can actually reach, and nobody has ever once been graded on the parts out of reach. The Spirit of God is the one who settles a person into the work in front of them, and what is written describes a shepherd arranging a place rather than explaining a plan.
The plain routing, which is the part a room cannot do
Here is the piece of this page that is not comfort, and it goes right here on purpose, because a page about a well kept room is exactly where somebody could decide the room was enough.
If something frightening is happening right now, that is 911, and it is before you finish reading this page. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And if the one in that room has been unwell and nobody qualified has looked at them, then no arrangement of light and warmth substitutes for the call: you ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today.
You are permitted to make that call from a very well kept room, and the two have never once been in competition. Psalm 23:2 describes the setting and the whole psalm still has a valley in it that gets walked through rather than decorated, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves somebody from the light switch to the phone.
A room is a kindness. It is not an assessment, and neither am I. That part belongs to somebody trained, and the sooner the better.
You have both of those in your hands tonight, and the passage has never once made the near work a reason to skip the far one. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a person through a call they have put off, and what is written leads somebody to still water without ever pretending the valley is not there.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one person who keeps a house.
You are not doing the unimportant part, and the room you have been quietly arranging has never once been beside the point. I am not consoling you. Psalm 23:2 has the Lord Himself described as somebody who makes a place to lie down and leads to water chosen for its stillness, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who gives a household job back its right name.
And this, which is the sentence I want standing when the page closes:
You have been tending in the one language that was actually available to you, and He has never once called that a smaller language. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a warm quiet room where nothing medical is happening, and what is written makes the arranging of a place the shepherd's own work.
If you want one sentence to carry back into that room, carry this one: What I can do here is not nothing, and the room I keep is part of the care and not a distraction from it.
Declare this over yourself
- Idea that the room is the small work, you are not the truth about this house. Psalm 23:2 has the shepherd Himself choose the pasture and the still water, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get to run me down over things that were never mine, in the name of Jesus.
- Running myself into the ground, you have no claim on my hands. The written word describes conditions chosen on purpose by the one doing the leading, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished measuring my care against work I was never given.
- Father, You are described as somebody who makes a place ready. Your word says he leadeth me beside the still waters, so by Your Spirit I tend the room tonight without apologizing for it, and I make the call I have been leaving.
