The Phone at Midnight

Same opening as every page here, because it is the most important sentence on the site and I am never going to bury it. This is not medicine. I am not a doctor, nothing on this page is treatment, and nothing here should ever be used in place of a nurse, a pharmacist or a clinic. If you are worried about somebody, or about yourself, get seen. That is not overreacting. That is what a sensible person does.

Now. Everybody in the house is asleep and you are lying there with the brightness turned right down, reading.

You started with a reasonable question. You are eleven pages in. The pages have got worse as they went and you have kept going anyway, because stopping now would leave the worst thing you read sitting on top of the pile.

And in the morning you will make breakfast and answer a text and put a wash on, and you will not say one word about any of it to anybody. Not one. It will sit there all day like a stone in a coat pocket, and then it will be night again.

The night is named, and it is named as a thing He covers

There is a line in the ninety-first Psalm that I have thought about more than almost any other, because of what it takes for granted.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day. (Psalm 91:5, King James Version)

It does not say there is no terror by night. It says there is a terror by night, it has a name, it is a known category of thing, and it is listed right alongside daylight dangers as something being covered.

Somebody who had never been awake at three in the morning would not have written that line. It is written by somebody who knew that the dark does something to a thought.

You are covered in the specific hours you are actually frightened in, and God has never once treated night fear as an imaginary category. Psalm 91:5 names the terror by night out loud before it says anything about not being afraid of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody stop being embarrassed about the small hours.

That is the thing I want you to have. Your night mind is not lying to you because you are weak. Night is a real multiplier and it is in the text.

You have been reading in the one condition that makes everything worse, and no thought has ever once been reliable at that hour. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a person from their own two in the morning, and it is written that the arrow by day and the terror by night both get named and both get covered.

What the searching is actually for

Let me be honest about the phone, because I have done exactly this.

The searching feels like preparation. It feels responsible. In the morning I would have told you I was informing myself. But that is not what it was, and I knew it at the time.

It was the feeling of doing something while being completely unable to do anything. It is the same instinct that makes a man rehang a gate. And it has one specific cost: at the end of it, there is now a frightening sentence in the house that nobody qualified has ever seen, and nobody in the house has said out loud.

You were never meant to hold a frightening thing in silence, and the passage has never once asked anybody to carry the night alone. Psalm 91:5 sits inside a whole psalm about being covered by somebody else, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a thought out of a person's head and into daylight.

That is the whole problem with the phone at midnight. It does not get the thing seen. It only gets it enlarged.

You are permitted to be frightened and say so, and being frightened has never once meant faithless. The Spirit of God is the one who is in a room at one in the morning when nothing has been solved, and what is written names fear as a thing covered rather than a thing forbidden.

The plain routing, which is what the phone was for

Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and it belongs here, because a page about night fear is exactly where somebody might settle in for another eleven pages instead of doing the obvious thing.

If something frightening is happening right now, you call 911. It is the middle of the night and that is what the number is for, and no one on the other end of it is going to be annoyed. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind and it is more than you can hold, 988 answers, and a real person picks up at any hour. And whatever it was that sent you looking, you ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist in the morning and you say it out loud in your own plain words.

You are allowed to make that call with nothing more than an uneasy feeling, and nobody has ever once been turned away for arriving early. The Holy Spirit is the one who gets a frightened person to say a sentence in daylight, and Psalm 91:5 has the night terror named by a God who is plainly not squeamish about it.

A person who trained for years can do in four minutes what eleven pages could not do in two hours. That is not a criticism of you. That is what training is.

You have a better place to take this than the one you took it to last night, and the text has never once asked anybody to be their own answer. The Spirit of God is the one who walks somebody into an appointment, and what is written puts the covering on somebody else rather than on the person doing the worrying.
