The same line goes at the top of every page here, and I put it first on purpose. This is not medicine. I have no clinical training, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever takes the place of a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If somebody is not eating and it worries you, that is a reason to ring somebody qualified today rather than a reason to read further. That is not alarmism. That is the correct order.
Now. You cooked.
You stood in that kitchen and you thought about what they might manage, and you made it smaller than usual because you did not want it to look like a demand, and you carried it in, and you put it down where they could reach it, and you left.
And an hour later you went back and it had not moved.
And you carried it out again and scraped it into the trash, and something in you took that plate personally. Not consciously. You would not say it out loud. But the plate said something to you on the way to the bin, and what it said was: that was not wanted, and neither, quite, are you.
He was fed without being asked to want it
There is a story about a man under a tree who had stopped wanting anything at all, and the way he gets handled in it is the gentlest thing in the book.
And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. (1 Kings 19:6, King James Version)
Look at what is not in that scene. Nobody asks him if he is hungry. Nobody explains why he should eat. Nobody stands over him. Nobody is disappointed in him.
Food gets put at his head, and he is left with it, and he eats some and lies straight back down. And then the whole thing happens again, because once was not enough and nobody treats that as a failure either.
You are doing what was done under that tree, and setting food beside somebody has never once required them to want it first. First Kings 19:6 has the meal placed at his head and the man left alone with it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates a person's kindness from another person's appetite.
That is the shape I would give you tonight. Put it there. Leave it. Do not stand in the doorway hoping.
You have been hoping in the doorway, and the hoping has never once been what made the difference. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the watching out of a kindness, and it is written that he ate and lay down again, which is not gratitude and was never required to be.
The plate is not a verdict
Let me say the hard part gently, because I know how this lands at nine at night in a kitchen.
Somebody who cannot eat is not refusing you. There is a whole machinery in a body that goes quiet when a person is unwell, and nothing about it is a comment on the cook, on the food, or on the love that went into it.
But that is not how it feels at the sink. At the sink it feels like a small rejection, one a day, and after three weeks of small rejections a person starts to feel like an irritation in their own house.
You are not being turned down, and an untouched plate has never once been a message about the person who made it. First Kings 19:6 has a man eat a little and sleep, and the text does not record one word of thanks or one word of complaint, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a false verdict out of somebody's hands at a sink.
And the second half of that story matters as much. He gets fed again. The first meal not being enough is not treated as proof that feeding him was pointless.
You were never wasting your time, and no meal that got made has ever once been undone by not being eaten. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps somebody making the next one, and what is written has the angel come back a second time without a word of reproach for the first.
The plain routing, and this one matters here
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on this subject it is the most important paragraph I will write.
If somebody has stopped eating or drinking and it frightens you, that is not something to manage at home and it is not something to read about. You ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, and you say exactly that sentence to them. If something is happening right now and you are scared, that is 911, and it is before you finish this page. And if the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up.
You are holding one piece of information that somebody qualified genuinely needs, and saying it out loud has never once been an overreaction. First Kings 19:6 has somebody else brought in to do what the man under the tree could not do for himself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person from a kitchen to a phone.
I am not able to tell you what not eating means. Nobody writing on the internet is. Somebody who trained for years can, and that conversation takes about four minutes.
You have a call in front of you that is more use than anything on the tray, and the text has never once asked one person to be the whole supply. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies somebody through a hard sentence on a phone, and what is written brings help to a man who had stopped asking for any.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one person standing at a sink.
You are not being rejected in that room, and the plate coming back out has never once been an account of your love. I am not comforting you. First Kings 19:6 has food set at a man's head by somebody who did not stay to watch him eat it, and when he ate only a little the answer was to come back and do it again, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes a nightly verdict out of somebody's hands.
And this, which is the one I want left standing when the kitchen light goes off:
You have been feeding somebody the way heaven fed a man who had stopped wanting anything, and that has never once been the lesser kind of care. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a kitchen at nine at night where somebody is scraping a plate, and what is written shows the food being given twice, without reproach, to a man who did not ask for either.
If you want one sentence to say as you wash up, say this one: What I can do here is not nothing, and a meal that was not eaten was still a meal that was made.
Declare this over yourself
- Plate that came back out, you are not a verdict on this household or on me. First Kings 19:6 has a man eat a little and lie down again with no reproach anywhere in the account, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get to sentence me at that sink, in the name of Jesus.
- Voice that says I am an irritation here, you have no standing in my own kitchen. The written word has the food set down and the giver step away, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished grading my love by what got eaten.
- Father, You fed a man twice who had stopped wanting anything at all. Your word says there was a cake baken on the coals and a cruse of water at his head, so by Your Spirit I cook again tonight, and I make the call I have been avoiding.
