I Keep Bringing Things

Same words at the top of every page I write here, and they matter more than the rest of it put together. This is not medicine. I am not a doctor or a nurse, nothing on this page is treatment, and nothing here ever stands in the place of a clinic or a pharmacist. If somebody has you worried, go and get them seen. That is not weakness. That is the first strong thing available.

Now. You have been in that room four times this week and you have never once gone in without something in your hands.

A drink. A newspaper. A bag of something from the store. A thing to fix, or a thing to plug in, or a thing you saw and thought of them.

None of that is bad. Some of it is genuinely kind. But I want to ask you the question I had to be asked myself, because I know the answer: what happens if you walk in there with nothing?

And if the honest answer is that you would not know where to put yourself, then the things in your hands are not gifts. They are a translation. They are the only way you know to say a sentence you have never said out loud.

He said the empty part out loud and kept going

There is a scene at a gate in Jerusalem where a man asks two apostles for money, and the answer starts with a plain admission of having none.

Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee. (Acts 3:6, King James Version)

Silver and gold have I none. That is the first half, and he says it without embarrassment, which is the part I find hardest.

And then the second half, which is not an apology. Such as I have give I thee. He does not leave because his pockets are empty. He does not come back tomorrow with something better. He gives what is there.

You are permitted to arrive with nothing in your pockets and still be the one who came, and having none has never once been the end of the sentence. Acts 3:6 puts the empty hands and the giving in one line with no shame between them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man walk into a room without a prop.

I want to be careful here, because the rest of that story is a miracle and this site does not trade in promises. I am not telling you what happens when you go in. I am telling you what Peter did before anything happened: he said what he did not have, and he stayed.

You have been carrying things in there to avoid saying one sentence, and the sentence has never once been beyond you. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a man to arrive as himself, and it is written that the giving started from an admission rather than from a supply.

The bag is a way of not sitting down

Let me say the honest part, because this is mine and I know it from the inside.

Carrying something in gives you a shape for the visit. You arrive, you hand it over, there is a small exchange about the thing, and then there is a natural place to leave. The object does the visit for you.

Take the object away and what is left is a chair and a person and no script, and that is the actual thing being asked for, which is why it is the thing we avoid.

You were being asked for the chair and the twenty minutes, and the bag has never once been what anybody in that bed was waiting for. Acts 3:6 has a man give attention and presence before he gives anything else, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps somebody in a room after the reason to leave has arrived.

And there is a cost on the other side. Somebody who is always being given things and never simply sat with starts to feel like a project rather than a person. A room full of provisions and no company is a strange kind of lonely.

You are able to change that tomorrow with nothing more than an empty pair of hands. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the awkwardness out of an unscripted twenty minutes, and what is written has Peter fasten his eyes on the man and speak to him before anything else happened.

The plain routing, which is the one thing worth carrying in

Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and it is the one thing I would genuinely have you bring.

If something frightening is happening right now, you call 911, and you do it before you finish this page. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And if the one in that room has been unwell and nobody qualified has looked at them, you ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist, or you sit there while they ring and you do not leave until it is booked.

You are carrying something real when you carry that, and it has never once been outweighed by anything in a bag. Acts 3:6 has a man name plainly what he did not have and then give exactly what he did, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves somebody from the store to the phone.

That is the useful errand. Everything else on this page is about sitting down.

You have one thing to bring that actually changes a week, and the passage has never once asked a man to bring what he does not have. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a person through an awkward call, and what is written begins with silver and gold have I none and does not stop there.
