The Phone in Another Room

Now. When was the last time nobody could reach you?

Not asleep. Asleep does not count, because the phone is on the table beside you and you have heard it at three in the morning and you know you have.

Out of reach. Genuinely unavailable, for half an hour, in the middle of an ordinary day, with the thing in a different room.

And if you cannot remember when, then something has quietly happened that I want to name, because naming it is most of the work. At some point, being reachable became the same thing in your mind as being responsible, and once those two things fuse, there is no hour left in a life that is not on duty.

The command is given in the middle of an upheaval

There is a verse people put on cards, and almost nobody reads the psalm it comes out of.

Be still, and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10, King James Version)

That is not said in a garden. The psalm it sits in is about the earth being removed and mountains being carried into the sea and nations raging. It is one of the loudest settings in the book.

And in the middle of that, the instruction is to be still. Not once the noise settles. During.

You are given stillness as an instruction inside the noise, and it has never once been offered only after things calm down. Psalm 46:10 puts the command in the middle of an upheaval rather than at the end of one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody be unreachable while things are still moving.

And the second half of that verse is the reason it works. Know that I am God. The stillness is not an act of confidence in the situation. It is an act of confidence in somebody else being awake.

You have never once been the only one paying attention. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps watch over the hours a person is not watching, and it is written that the being still and the knowing are in the same short sentence, tied together.

What being permanently reachable is doing

Let me say the practical half, because the practical half is what changes anything.

A person who is never out of reach is never fully anywhere. Part of the mind stays on the door, permanently, and that part does not rest even when the rest of the body does. It is a low continuous cost and it is invisible, which is why nobody ever accounts for it.

And there is a second thing, and it is the harder one. Being permanently available does not actually make you more useful in an emergency. It makes you less rested for the one that eventually comes.

You are spending something every hour on a readiness nobody has ever once been given by anybody. Psalm 46:10 commands the stillness of the people while the mountains are being moved by somebody else, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates being available from being responsible.

And I want to be honest about the exceptions, because on this site that matters. If you are the named person for somebody who is genuinely unwell right now, then thirty minutes out of reach needs one other person to hold the phone. That is not a reason to skip it. It is the way to do it.

You were never asked to be the only line, and no household has ever once been safer for having a single one. The Spirit of God is the one who gets somebody to hand a phone to another person for half an hour, and what is written puts the stillness in a setting where a great deal was going on.

The plain routing, and it goes before the half hour

Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and it belongs first.

If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and no half hour is the answer to it. If the heavy thing today is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And if the tiredness has never been looked at, ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, before you put the phone anywhere.

You are permitted to do both today, and the two of them have never once been alternatives. Psalm 46:10 sets stillness inside a world still in motion rather than as an alternative to attending to anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a page about being unreachable from becoming a reason to delay a call.

Make the calls first. Then put it down. That is the only order on this page.

You have two calls and one half hour and the passage has never once asked anybody to choose. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in both, and what is written puts the command to be still in the middle of the noise rather than after it.
