The House Will Still Be Standing

Every article on this site opens the same way and this one does too. This is not medicine. Now. I am going to describe a belief that you hold and have never said out loud.

You believe this house runs on you. Not in a proud way. You would deny it if anybody put it like that, and you would mean the denial.

But watch what happens when somebody suggests you take an afternoon. There is a small internal calculation, very fast, and at the end of it there is a feeling that is not tiredness and is not reluctance. It is closer to vertigo. Because underneath everything, you believe that if you stop, the whole arrangement comes apart, and nobody has ever asked you to examine that belief because it has never been spoken.

In my family we had a word for the man who holds everything up. And he was admired, and he was tired for forty years, and he died at sixty one.

Somebody else is named as the builder

There is a line at the start of a short psalm that answers this exactly, and it answers it by naming somebody.

Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. (Psalm 127:1, King James Version)

Read the two halves. The building and the keeping are both assigned, and they are not assigned to the man in the middle of the house.

And notice what it does not say. It does not say do not build. It does not say do not watch. The labor and the watching are still there, and they are still done by people. What it settles is what the outcome rests on.

You are one of the builders and you have never once been the foundation. Psalm 127:1 puts the building and the keeping on the Lord while the men keep working, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the vertigo out of an afternoon off.

That is the correction, and it is not a small one. Your labor is real and it matters. It is simply not the thing the house is standing on, and those are two different claims that get confused in a man's head over about twenty years.

You have been holding something up that was never once resting on you. The Spirit of God is the one who tells a man the truth about load bearing, and it is written that the watchman waketh in vain if the keeping is not the Lord's, which does not say the watchman should go home.

What the belief is doing to the rest of them

Let me say the practical half, because this is the part that is about other people.

A house that runs on one man teaches everybody in it that they are passengers. Your sons do not step in, because there has never been a gap for them to step into. Your wife does not take things on, because they have all been taken on already and taking one back would look like a criticism.

So the belief produces the evidence. Nobody else does anything, which proves it all runs through you, which is why you cannot stop.

You are the author of the proof, and the proof has never once been about anybody else's willingness. Psalm 127:1 puts the keeping in hands other than the watchman's, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man the loop he has built and is standing inside.

And the way out is not a conversation. It is an afternoon. You cannot argue a family into stepping up, and you cannot explain the space into existence. You have to leave one.

You were never asked to be the whole arrangement, and no household has ever once been strengthened by having one. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a man to leave a gap on purpose, and what is written keeps the labor and hands the outcome somewhere else entirely.

The plain routing, and it goes first

If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and an afternoon is not the answer to it. If the heavy thing today is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And if the reason you are this worn down has never been looked at, ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, before you take any afternoon anywhere.

You are permitted to do both this week, and they have never once been alternatives. Psalm 127:1 leaves the labor and the watching in place and settles only what they rest on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a page about stopping from becoming a reason to delay a call.

The man in my family who held everything up never made that call either. I am not going to pretend the two things are unrelated in my own head.

You have a call and an afternoon and the passage has never once asked a man to choose. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in both, and what is written puts the keeping of the city on somebody who does not sleep.
