The Field Waited

The same words at the top of every page on this site. This is not medicine. Now. Answer this honestly, because it is the whole article.

What do you think would happen if you stopped for one day?

Not in general terms. Specifically. Name the thing. The thing that would be ruined, the job that would not get done, the consequence that would land on Monday.

And here is what I have found nearly every time I have asked a man that question: he cannot name it. There is a very large feeling and behind the feeling there is a surprisingly small list, and a great deal of it turns out to be things that would simply happen a day later.

The feeling is real. I am not calling it imaginary. But it has been running your life for years without ever once being asked to show its working.

A whole year was commanded off

There is a command in Leviticus about land that I think is one of the boldest economic instructions in the book.

But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard. (Leviticus 25:4, King James Version)

A year. Not a day. A whole year, in an agricultural economy, where the field is the food and the food is the winter.

And the instruction is flat. Do not sow. Do not prune. There is no clause in it about doing a bit of quiet work at the edges where nobody would notice.

You are looking at a command that assumed the whole thing would hold, and holding has never once depended on a man not stopping. Leviticus 25:4 takes an entire year out of the working cycle and puts the outcome somewhere other than on the farmer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man hear that as a real instruction rather than as an ancient curiosity.

I am not going to make that verse into a promise about your business or your week, because it is not one and this site does not deal in those. What it does settle is whether the God who set that up is nervous about a man stopping.

You have been more anxious about this than the one who wrote the command. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies somebody at the edge of a field, and it is written that the seventh year was a sabbath unto the land, which is a thing nobody could have kept without being sure of something.

The land is the Creator's, and it is not your responsibility alone

Let me say the plain thing about the ground, because men who work outside can go wrong in two directions here.

The land in that passage is not a spiritual force and it is not owed anything. It is made, it belongs to the one who made it, and the rest that is commanded is called a sabbath for the LORD rather than a favor to the soil.

Which means the rest is not a transaction with the ground. It is an act of trust toward somebody who made the ground and made the man standing on it.

You are not the one holding that ground together, and no field has ever once been kept by a man's refusal to stop. Leviticus 25:4 names the sabbath as being unto the LORD rather than unto the land, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a man back into the right relation to the dirt he stands on.

And the second direction, which is the more common one out here. A man can make his own labor the thing everything depends on, and then he cannot stop, because stopping would be the same as letting go of the rope.

You were never holding the rope, and the holding has never once been yours to do. The Spirit of God is the one who takes an imaginary weight off a man's shoulders, and what is written puts a whole year of not sowing into law without apology.

The plain routing, and it goes first

Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and it goes ahead of the rest.

If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and stopping for a day is not the answer to it. If the heavy thing today is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And if the reason you are this worn down has never been looked at, ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, before you take any day off anywhere.

You are permitted to do both this week, and they have never once been alternatives. Leviticus 25:4 puts the rest inside an ordinary working life rather than as a substitute for attending to anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a page about rest from turning into a reason to delay.

Call first. Stop second. That is the order on this page and it is the only sequence in it.

You have a call and a day, and the passage has never once asked a man to pick one. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in both, and what is written commands the stopping without ever suspending anything else a person owes.
