Rest Came Before Anybody Earned It

Every page on this site opens with the same words and this one is no different. This is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing on this page is treatment, and nothing I write ever takes the place of a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If the reason you are this worn down has never been looked at by anybody qualified, that call comes first, before anything else on this page.

Now. Let me ask the question that shows the shape of the problem.

What would you have had to do today, exactly, to be allowed to stop this evening?

Take a minute over it, because most people find they cannot answer. There is a felt standard, and it is real enough to govern a whole life, and when a person tries to say it out loud it turns out to have no edges at all.

And a standard with no edges is one that can never be met. So the stopping never gets earned, and the person stays permanently slightly in debt to themselves, every evening, for decades.

The command included the people who could not have earned it

There is a version of the sabbath command in Deuteronomy that lists the people it covers, and the list is the argument.

But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. (Deuteronomy 5:14, King James Version)

Read who is in that list. The son and the daughter, who had done nothing. The servants, whose work was not their own. The stranger, who had no standing in that house at all. The animals.

Nobody on that list qualified. That is the point of the list existing.

You are inside a command that was written to include the ones who could not possibly have earned it. Deuteronomy 5:14 extends the rest to children, servants, strangers and animals in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody stop auditing their own day before lying down.

And notice that the command does not distinguish between the household member who had worked hard and the one who had not. There is no clause about productivity anywhere in it. The rest is attached to the day rather than to the performance.

You have been attaching rest to your own output, and it has never once been attached there in the text. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a thing out of the category of wages, and it is written that the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God, which puts the ownership of the day somewhere other than in a person's achievements.

Where the arrears came from

Let me be practical about the mechanism, because naming it usually loosens it.

A person who rests on the basis of having earned it is running a ledger. And a ledger only works if there is a figure to hit. There is no figure here, so the ledger never balances, and a ledger that never balances produces one feeling continuously: not yet.

That is the whole of it. Not yet. Said at nine in the evening, every evening, for years.

You are keeping accounts that have never once had a total at the bottom. Deuteronomy 5:14 attaches rest to the day rather than to a quantity of work, and the Holy Spirit is the one who closes an account somebody has been running against themselves.

And I want to be clear about what I am not saying, because on this site it matters. I am not telling you that resting will fix your tiredness, or shorten anything, or improve your week. I am not able to say any of that. Permission is the entire content of this page, and it is enough on its own.

You were never given a result here, and permission has never once required one. The Spirit of God is the one who hands something over without attaching an outcome, and what is written commands the day without explaining what it will accomplish.

The plain routing, and it comes before the evening

Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and it goes ahead of the rest of it.

If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and no evening off is the answer to it. If the heavy thing today is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And if the reason you are this tired has never been looked at, ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, and do it before you decide anything about tonight.

You are permitted to do both today, and they have never once been alternatives. Deuteronomy 5:14 puts the rest inside an ordinary working week rather than as a substitute for anything a person owes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a page about rest from becoming a reason to delay.

Ring first. Then stop. That is the whole sequence and it is the only one on this page.

You have a call and an evening and the passage has never once asked anybody to choose. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in both, and what is written names the day as the Lord's rather than as a reward anybody collects.
