Tired Has Become the Weather

Before anything else, and it goes at the top of every page on this site: this is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever takes the place of a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If any of this describes you, the useful part of this article is the part where I tell you to ring somebody. Do that before you finish reading.

Now. I want to ask a question that people find surprisingly hard.

When did you last feel like yourself?

Not last well. Not last healthy. Just like yourself, in the ordinary way, where getting through a Tuesday did not require a plan.

And if the honest answer is that you cannot place it, that you would have to think about the year rather than the month, then something has happened that nobody warned you about: being worn out stopped being an event in your life and became the climate of it.

And here is what a climate does. You stop reporting it. Nobody says how the weather has been every day for a year. It is simply the conditions, and conditions are not news.

The verse was written for the exact people who cannot hear it

There is a line in Isaiah that everybody quotes at tired people, and I want to read it slowly, because the two halves are aimed at two different things.

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. (Isaiah 40:29, King James Version)

Two groups. The faint, and them that have no might. Those are not the same group and that is the point of naming both.

The faint are the ones who have run out today. And the ones with no might are the ones for whom there is no today left to run out of, because there has not been a full tank for so long that the question does not apply.

You are named specifically in that verse, and the second half was never a repeat of the first. Isaiah 40:29 puts the ones with no might in their own clause rather than folding them into the faint, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody hear a verse they have been reading past for a year.

That has always struck me as extraordinarily attentive. Somebody who has been running on empty for a long time is a different person from somebody who is tired this evening, and the text knows it.

You have been in the second clause the whole time, and nobody has ever once had to be in the first one to be looked at. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a familiar verse specific to the person reading it, and it is written that there are two conditions named here rather than one.

A climate does not get reported, and that is the danger

Let me say the practical half, because on this site the practical half is what matters.

When something becomes the background, it stops being described. And when it stops being described, nobody qualified ever hears about it.

That is the actual risk in what has happened to you. Not the tiredness. The silence around the tiredness. A person can go two years without ever once saying it in a sentence to anybody whose job it is to listen.

You are holding a description that nobody trained has ever heard, and the holding has never once been the same as coping. Isaiah 40:29 names conditions plainly rather than leaving them assumed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a long thing said out loud to somebody who can do something about it.

And I want to be careful here, because this is exactly where a page like this could do harm. I am not going to guess at what is happening. I am not going to tell you how long anything should last, or what it might mean, or whether it is serious. I am not able to and it would be wrong.

You were never going to get an answer from a page, and no article has ever once been able to look at anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who moves somebody from reading to ringing, and what is written promises strength to the exhausted without ever once describing a mechanism.

The plain routing, which is the only instruction here

Here is the part of this page that is not comfort. On an article like this one it is the only thing that matters.

If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and it does not wait for an appointment. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And the tiredness that has become your weather goes to a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, described with the length of it attached.

You are permitted to take up somebody's time with a thing that has no drama in it. Isaiah 40:29 spends a whole clause on the people who have nothing left rather than on the people in a crisis, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody make an undramatic phone call.

Say the duration. That is the one thing I would press on. Not just that you are tired. How long. The length is the useful part and it is the part people leave out.

You have information in your possession that nobody else can give them, and the length of it has never once been a detail. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a plain conversation with somebody qualified, and what is written attends to the ones who have been empty rather than only the ones who just emptied.
