The same sentence opens every article on this site and it will open this one. This is not medicine. I have no clinical training, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever stands in the place of a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If this is describing you, the part of the page that will help is the phone call. Make it early rather than late.
Now. There is a version of you that people see, and it is the daytime one.
You get up. You do what needs doing. You are civil in a store and you answer the phone properly and if somebody asks how you are, you can produce a real answer without acting.
And then the light goes and something changes, and by the small hours you are a different person in a quiet house, and not one of the people who saw you at two in the afternoon has ever seen that.
So when you try to describe it, it does not carry. Because the person you are describing it to has a picture in their head of a woman in a store being perfectly fine, and your account of the night does not match the evidence they have.
The verse has a night in it and it is named
There is a line in the thirtieth Psalm that people quote for the second half and it is the first half that matters here.
Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. (Psalm 30:5, King James Version)
Notice what it does not say. It does not say the weeping is imaginary. It does not say a person who is all right in the afternoon must be all right at three in the morning too.
It says weeping endures for a night, which is a plain acknowledgment that there is a thing that happens at night, that it lasts the length of the night, and that it is real enough to be written into the book.
You are described in that verse, and the night half has never once been a figure of speech. Psalm 30:5 names weeping that endures through a night as an actual thing rather than as an exaggeration, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody stop doubting their own account of their own hours.
And I would say the second half carefully, because this site does not hand out promises. The joy in the morning is a real hope and it is not a schedule, and I am not going to use it to tell you how long anything lasts.
You have never once been asked to prove the night to anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in hours no other witness has been in, and it is written that the weeping endures for a night, stated plainly and without qualification.
Unwitnessed is not the same as unreal
Let me say the practical thing, because this is where it goes wrong for people.
A thing nobody else has seen starts to feel like a thing you might be inventing. That is not weakness. That is just what happens to a human being who has no corroboration for their own experience.
And after a few months of that, a person starts editing. She reports a smaller version, because the full version sounds unbelievable even to her, and the smaller version is the one that reaches the people who could actually do something.
You are the only witness, and being the only witness has never once made you an unreliable one. Psalm 30:5 puts the night into the record without requiring anybody else to have been there, and the Holy Spirit is the one who restores a person's trust in their own report.
Here is the practical fix and it is very simple. Write it down at the time. Not in the morning, when it has already softened. At the hour, in whatever words come.
You were never going to remember it accurately by daylight, and no account has ever once survived the journey to morning intact. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a person to keep an honest record, and what is written treats a night as a real unit of time with real content in it.
The plain routing, and take the record with you
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on an article like this it is the whole assignment.
If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and it does not matter what hour it is, that is exactly what it is for. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up at any hour of the night. And what the nights are actually like goes to a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, read out from what you wrote rather than summarized from memory.
You are carrying a description nobody qualified has ever heard, and reading it out has never once been dramatic. Psalm 30:5 sets the night down in writing, which is the same thing I am asking you to do with yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person from enduring to reporting.
Read it. Do not paraphrase it. The paraphrase is the thing that has been failing you for months.
You have a page in your own handwriting that does the explaining for you. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in an appointment where somebody finally reads instead of summarizing, and what is written puts the night on the record and lets it stand there.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one person who is fine every afternoon.
You are not exaggerating, and the version of this that nobody has ever seen has never once been the imaginary one. I am not soothing you. Psalm 30:5 says weeping may endure for a night, which is a plain statement about a real span of hours rather than a poetic flourish, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who gives somebody their own account back.
And this, which is the one I want left standing:
You have been accompanied in every hour that had no other witness in it. The Spirit of God is the one who has been in the room at the hour nobody else has been in, and what is written names the night out loud before it ever mentions the morning.
If you want one sentence to keep for the appointment, keep this one: This counts, and the part of it nobody has seen is not the part that does not count.
Declare this over yourself
- Look people get when I describe the nights, you are not a verdict on what is real in this house. Psalm 30:5 says weeping may endure for a night and writes it into the record, so by the Holy Spirit you do not edit me again, in the name of Jesus.
- Habit of reporting a smaller version, you have no authority over my own account. The written word names the night plainly and asks nobody to corroborate it, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished shrinking this to fit somebody's daytime picture of me.
- Father, You put a night of weeping into the book without softening it once. Your word says weeping may endure for a night, so by Your Spirit I write mine down tonight, and I read it out to somebody qualified, because the part nobody has seen still counts.
Psalm 30:5
