Same words at the start of every page here, and they are the most important ones I write. This is not medicine. I am not a doctor or a nurse, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever stands in for a clinic or a pharmacist. This piece has one job: to get a phone picked up. If that is yours to do, do it before you get to the bottom.
Now. You did not decide against it.
That is the thing I want to be fair about right at the start. There was no morning where you sat down and decided you were not going to bother. What happened was that something came up. A real something. Work, or a kid, or a funeral, or the truck.
So you rang and moved it, and you fully meant to ring back, and then the week did what weeks do.
And now, if somebody asked you which month that was, you would have to think about it. And the thinking about it is the whole subject of this page.
Time is described as a thing you cannot see the edge of
There is a line in James that people read at funerals, and it is not a funeral line. It is a line about how planning actually works for creatures like us.
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (James 4:14, King James Version)
A vapor. Something with no clear edges, that you cannot measure by looking at it, that is gone before anybody has finished describing it.
That is not a threat. It is an accurate description of why a person cannot feel time passing. Nobody experiences four months. People experience a Tuesday, and then some Tuesdays, and then somebody says four months and it does not sound right.
You are not careless, and the months getting away from you has never once been a character fault. James 4:14 describes time as a thing human beings genuinely cannot hold in their hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody stop reading a gap as evidence about themselves.
That is the mercy in that verse and people miss it because of where it usually gets read. It is not saying you are bad at planning. It is saying nobody can see the edge of a vapor, so stop trusting your own sense of how long it has been.
You have been trusting an instrument that has never once been accurate. The Spirit of God is the one who puts a real date back in front of a person, and it is written that we know not what shall be on the morrow, which is said about everybody and not about the careless.
A postponement is a live thing until somebody kills it
Let me be practical, because that is what a page like this is for.
Here is the trick your mind has played. In your head, that appointment still exists. It is out there somewhere, in a sort of pending state, waiting to be dealt with. It feels handled, because you did do something about it: you rang up and you moved it.
But the clinic does not have it. Nobody has it. It exists in exactly one place, which is a slightly guilty feeling you get on Sunday nights.
You are carrying a thing that only exists inside you, and no appointment has ever once rebooked itself. James 4:14 puts the whole business of tomorrow outside a person's control, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a pending feeling turn back into a phone call.
And the fix is stupidly small. That is the part that annoys people when I say it. Four minutes. One call. You do not even have to explain the four months.
You were never going to feel ready for it, and no morning has ever once arrived with the readiness attached. The Spirit of God is the one who moves somebody from intending to dialing, and what is written treats the morrow as a thing nobody is holding, which is exactly why today is the one you get.
The plain routing, which is the whole of the assignment
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort. On a page about a canceled appointment, it is nearly the only part.
If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and that is not a rebooking, that is now. If the heavy thing tonight is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And the appointment you moved goes back on the book today, by telephone, to a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist, and you take whatever they offer even if it is inconvenient.
You are one short conversation away from ending this, and it has never once required you to explain yourself. James 4:14 makes a plain case for doing the thing while today is the day you are actually standing in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets somebody through a call they have been meaning to make since spring.
Take the bad slot. Take the one on the wrong side of town. The good slot is what got you here.
You have permission to accept an inconvenient appointment, and the passage has never once promised a better week later. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies somebody rearranging a day they did not want to rearrange, and what is written names tomorrow as the thing none of us knows anything about.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one person who moved a Tuesday.
You are not somebody who let this go, and the months that got away from you have never once been proof of anything about your character. I am not excusing you. James 4:14 says plainly that we know not what shall be on the morrow and calls a life a vapor, which is a description and not an accusation, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who turns a vague pending feeling back into a real phone number.
And this, which is the one I want left standing:
You have today, and today has never once required you to have handled yesterday well. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a five minute phone call made from a shed, and what is written puts the morrow outside our hands and leaves the day we are standing in fully inside them.
If you want one sentence to say while it is ringing, say this one: Going is not giving up, and a thing I only meant to move is a thing I can put back on the book today.
Declare this over yourself
- Pending feeling I have been calling handled, you are not an appointment and you never were one. James 4:14 says we know not what shall be on the morrow, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get the rest of this year, in the name of Jesus.
- Months that got away from me, you have no authority to name what kind of man I am. The written word calls a life a vapor and says it about everybody, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished reading a gap as a verdict.
- Father, You told us plainly that nobody is holding the morrow. Your word says it is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, so by Your Spirit I ring them today, and I take whatever day they offer me.
