Every page on this site starts here and this one is no exception. This is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever stands in for a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. This article exists to get one phone call made. If it is your call, make it before you finish reading.
Now. There is a thing in your family that everybody knows about and nobody says.
It has been going on a while. Long enough that there is a way of talking around it that everybody has learned. Long enough that the youngest ones have picked it up without ever being told, which is how you know it has become the architecture of the house rather than a decision anybody made.
And the reason nobody breaks it is not that anybody is unkind. It is that breaking it now, after this long, would look like an accusation. It would be a person standing up at a table and announcing that everybody else has been wrong for two years.
So you do not do it. And neither does anybody else, for the same reason, all of you protecting each other from a conversation every one of you wants to have.
The list has both halves in it
There is a famous list in Ecclesiastes that people quote for weddings, and the line I want is one of the plainest in it.
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak. (Ecclesiastes 3:7, King James Version)
Both halves are named. Keeping silence is a real thing with a real place in it, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Sometimes not saying a thing is the loving move and everybody in a family knows it.
But the sentence has two halves, and the whole point of the list is that a season ends. The silence that was right in the first month is not automatically right in the twenty fourth.
You are standing in a season that has already turned, and a silence has never once been permanent just because it was once right. Ecclesiastes 3:7 sets speaking and keeping silence side by side as two seasons rather than two personalities, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a family tell which one it is standing in.
That is the thing I would hand you. The question is not whether your family is the kind that talks about things. The question is what time it is.
You have been treating a season like a character trait, and no household has ever once been required to keep a silence forever. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a person what o'clock it is in their own family, and it is written that there is a time to speak, which means somebody has to notice when it arrives.
Nobody in that family is enjoying this
Let me say the thing from the other side of the table.
You think you would be breaking the peace. In my experience, and my family is large and loud and does exactly this, the peace is not what is being kept. What is being kept is a shared avoidance, and it costs everybody, and every single person at that table is carrying their own version of it privately.
When somebody finally says it, the usual reaction is not outrage. It is a kind of collapse of relief, followed by four people saying at once that they have been worried for months.
You are one sentence away from giving a whole family permission, and the speaking has never once been the thing that broke a house. Ecclesiastes 3:7 names the time to speak as a legitimate season rather than as a failure of tact, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person from the doorway to the table.
And if it does land badly, that is survivable too. A difficult Sunday is not a catastrophe. It is a difficult Sunday.
You were never given the job of keeping everybody comfortable, and comfort has never once been the same thing as care. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies somebody who is about to say an unpopular sentence, and what is written puts the speaking in the same list as the sewing, which is what people do after something has been torn.
The plain routing, which is what the conversation is for
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and in a family like yours it is the paragraph that matters.
If something is happening right now and anybody is frightened, that is 911, and it happens before the conversation does. If the heavy thing tonight is in somebody's own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And the thing nobody mentions goes to a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist this week, and one named person in that family makes the call.
You are looking at the one job in this family that cannot be left to everybody in general. Ecclesiastes 3:7 has a season for speaking and the whole passage is about things being done at the right time rather than eventually, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a name against a task nobody has claimed.
Say the sentence, then hand over the phone. Do not leave the room with everybody agreeing in principle, because agreeing in principle is what the last two years have been made of.
You have a way to end this that takes one afternoon, and the passage has never once made waiting the safer half of the list. The Spirit of God is the one who is present at a table where somebody finally said it, and what is written names a time to speak and expects somebody to recognize it.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one person who is tired of steering around it.
You are not starting a fight, and saying a true thing at that table has never once been an accusation against anybody. I am not underestimating your family. Ecclesiastes 3:7 names keeping silence as a real season with a real end on it, and it puts speaking in the same list as an equal, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who tells a person what time it is in their own house.
And this, which is the one I want left standing when the plates get cleared:
You have been given the sentence, and the sentence has never once been the thing that damaged a family. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in the four seconds after somebody says it out loud, and what is written puts the sewing right beside the rending, which is what families do afterward.
If you want one sentence to say in the car before you go in, say this one: Going is not giving up, and saying the thing out loud in this family is not the same as starting a fight.
Declare this over yourself
- Agreement nobody in this family ever made, you are not the peace and you never were. Ecclesiastes 3:7 says there is a time to speak, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get a third year, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear of sounding like an accusation, you have no authority at that table. The written word puts the speaking and the silence side by side as seasons, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished mistaking avoidance for kindness.
- Father, You named a time to keep silence and You named a time to speak, and You did not leave either one running. Your word says there is a time to speak, so by Your Spirit I say it today, and somebody in this family makes the call before the plates are cleared.
