The Song She Sang in That Room

The same words go at the top of every page on this site. This is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever stands in for a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If somebody in that house is unwell, ring somebody qualified today, before anything on this page about what she used to sing.

Now. You can hear it.

You could hum it right now if nobody was listening. You know where she stood when she sang it and roughly what time of day it was and what the room smelled like, and you have carried the whole thing intact for however many years it has been.

And you have never once sung it. Not in that house, not over anybody, not out loud.

And if you ask yourself why, the answer that comes back is something like: that was hers. She could do that. It would be strange coming from me.

I want to look at that, because I think there is something underneath it that is not about singing at all.

The song in the night is described as His

There is a line in the forty second Psalm that has the phrase I want, and it puts the song in an unexpected place.

Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. (Psalm 42:8, King James Version)

In the night his song shall be with me. Not her song. His song, and it is described as being with the person in the night.

That matters for you specifically, because the thing you have been treating as belonging to one woman is described in the text as belonging to God and being present with whoever is in the dark.

You have been handed a thing that was never once hers to own. Psalm 42:8 calls the night song His and puts it with the person rather than with a particular singer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody pick up a thing they thought was borrowed.

And notice the setting. Night. The psalm puts the lovingkindness in the daytime and the song at night, which is when a sick house is at its hardest and when your grandmother, presumably, was singing.

You are standing in exactly the hour that song was made for. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in the part of a night nobody else is awake for, and it is written that the song in the night is His and is with whoever is there.

What is actually stopping you

Let me say the practical half, because I do not think this is about ownership at all.

Here is what I think it is. If you sing in that room, something happens that you cannot control. Your voice does something. Your face does something. And the person in that bed sees you feel it, and then it is out in the open and neither of you can pretend for a while.

Your grandmother could do that because she had already decided to be a person who is visible. That decision has not been made in this house yet, and singing is the fastest way to lose the option of putting it off.

You are not short of a voice, and the voice has never once been the thing standing in that doorway. Psalm 42:8 has a man speak about his own night out loud and write it down where everybody could read it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets somebody to be visible in a room where they have been careful.

And I will say the plain thing about how it sounds, because that is the other half of the excuse. It does not matter. Nobody in a sick bed has ever once graded a voice. The whole point of it is that somebody is doing it anyway.

You were never being auditioned in that room, and nobody in it has ever once been listening for quality. The Spirit of God is the one who fills a room where somebody is singing badly on purpose, and what is written puts the song in the night without one word about who is able to carry a tune.

The plain routing, and no song replaces it

Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on an article about a grandmother's song it needs saying plainly.

If somebody in that house is in trouble right now, that is 911, and no song is any part of that answer. If the heavy thing today is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And if anybody there is unwell, ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, and do that before you do anything else on this page.

You are permitted to sing and to ring in the same evening, and they have never once been alternatives. Psalm 42:8 puts the song and the prayer in one verse with a whole real situation underneath it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a page about singing from becoming a reason to handle something at home.

Whatever she sang over that house, it was not medicine and it did not make anybody well. It made somebody less alone at two in the morning, which is a different and real thing.

You have a call that has never once been replaced by anything anybody sang. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with somebody dialing and then going back in to sing, and what is written puts the song beside the prayer rather than instead of the help.
