The Blessing Spoken Over a House

Every page on this site opens the same way and I am not going to hurry it. This is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever stands in for a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If somebody in that house is unwell, ring somebody qualified today, before anything else written here.

Now. You used to say something and now you say nothing.

What you were given, growing up, was a set of words to say over a sick house. And when you got older you worked out that some of it was not blessing at all. It was superstition wearing a good coat: things said to keep something away, things said because not saying them felt dangerous.

And once you could see that, you could not go on saying it.

Which was right. But what happened next was not right, and it is the reason for this page. You did not replace it. You stopped speaking over that house altogether, and it has been silent in there for years, and the silence was never what you were aiming for.

The words were written out and handed over

There is a blessing in Numbers that was given to be spoken, and the reason it is the right one here is that the words are supplied.

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: the LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee. (Numbers 6:24, King James Version)

Somebody was told what to say. The words were written down and given to people to speak over other people, and there was nothing left to invent.

That is what you have been missing. Not permission. Words. You put down the old ones for good reasons and then had nothing in your mouth, and a person with nothing in their mouth says nothing.

You have been handed the actual words, and they have never once needed to be made up by anybody. Numbers 6:24 supplies the sentence rather than leaving it to be invented, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts something back into a mouth that has been empty.

And look at what the blessing does and does not do. It asks for keeping and for a face turned toward somebody and for grace. It does not promise an outcome, and it does not keep anything away by being said.

You are being given something to say that has never once been a charm. The Spirit of God is the one who tells the difference between a blessing and a superstition in the same house, and it is written that the words were put into the mouths of people to speak over other people, and the content of them is entirely about God turning toward somebody.

The difference, said plainly

Let me be exact, because this is the distinction that has been missing for years and nobody has said it out loud.

A superstition works by being said. It is the saying that is supposed to do something, which is why the fear of not saying it is so strong, and why missing it feels dangerous.

A blessing works differently. It asks. It is addressed to somebody who is free to answer as He chooses, and nothing in it is conditional on the wording or on your getting it right, and missing it does not cause harm.

You are able to tell the two apart now, and the telling apart has never once required you to stop speaking. Numbers 6:24 puts the whole weight on the Lord blessing and keeping rather than on the person reciting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives somebody words that do not depend on being performed correctly.

And that means the pressure is off. You can say it badly. You can forget a line. You can say it on a Tuesday and not on a Wednesday and no harm comes to anybody, because the thing is a request and not a mechanism.

You were never the operative part, and no blessing has ever once run on the person saying it. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the pressure off a person's own mouth, and what is written puts the blessing and the keeping in God's hands and leaves the speaker only the speaking.

The plain routing, and no blessing replaces it

Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and on an article about words over a sick house it is the most important paragraph.

If somebody in that house is in trouble right now, that is 911, and nothing said over anybody is part of that answer. If the heavy thing today is in your own mind, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And if anybody there is unwell, ring a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, and do that before you say anything over anything.

You are permitted to bless and to ring in the same hour, and they have never once been in competition. Numbers 6:24 asks God to keep somebody and does not tell anybody to stay home, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a page about blessing from becoming a reason to delay a call.

I will say the obvious thing once more, because on this site it can never be said too often. The blessing is not medicine. Saying it over somebody does not treat anything, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

You have a call and a blessing and the passage has never once made one of them the substitute for the other. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with somebody who phoned first and spoke afterwards, and what is written asks for grace and a face turned toward somebody and promises no outcome at all.
