The same words go at the top of every page on this site and they are the ones that matter. This is not medicine. I am not a clinician, nothing here is treatment, and nothing on this page ever stands in for a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist. If anybody in that house is unwell, ring somebody qualified today. Nothing on this page is a substitute for that and nothing ever will be.
Now. Everybody swore by it.
That is the phrase, and it is the whole problem. Your sister swore by it. Two women at church swore by it. Somebody at work described it in a way that made it sound obvious, and there was a small chorus of agreement, and everybody in that conversation had the same story about how quickly it had helped.
So you did it. Exactly as described, for as long as they said, without cheating.
And nothing happened. Nothing at all.
And what arrived next was not disappointment about the thing. It was a much quieter and more corrosive thought, which was: so what is different about me?
The disciples asked the question and He refused it
There is a moment in John where a group of people look at a man in difficulty and immediately go looking for whose fault it is, and the answer they get is the one you need.
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. (John 9:3, King James Version)
Neither. That is the first word out of His mouth, and it is a refusal.
They had offered two options and both of them were about blame, and instead of choosing one He declines the whole frame. It is not this man. It is not his parents. The question you are asking is the wrong question.
You are asking a question that got refused two thousand years ago. John 9:3 has the search for a fault answered with neither rather than with a name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an investigation out of somebody's hands.
And notice who was asking. Not enemies. His own people, sincerely, out of the most natural instinct there is, which is that when something does not work there must be a reason and the reason must be somebody.
You have been running an inquiry that has never once had anything to find. The Spirit of God is the one who closes a case a person opened against themselves, and it is written that the answer began with a word that refused both options offered.
What actually happened, as far as anybody can say
Let me be plain, because on this site plainness is the whole of my job.
I do not know why it did nothing. I cannot know and neither can anybody who was not there and is not qualified, and I am not going to guess at it in order to make you feel better.
What I will say is that bodies and households and situations are not identical, and that the same thing arriving in two different lives is not the same event, and that none of that is a moral fact about anybody.
You are not a defective version of the people it worked for. John 9:3 declines the idea that a difficulty has to be traced back to a person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody stop being the explanation for their own life.
And I want to be careful about something, because a page like this could easily go wrong. I am not going to tell you what to try next. That is not what this page is for and it would make this a recommendation, which is the one thing this site has never been.
You were never asked to become your own physician, and no page has ever once been able to look at anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a tired person from starting another round of it, and what is written moves the whole subject off the person and onto God without explaining anything.
The plain routing, and it is the only thing to try
Here is the part of this page that is not comfort, and it is the only instruction on it.
If something is happening right now that frightens you, that is 911, and it does not wait for anything. If the heavy thing today is in your own mind, and if the not working has started to feel like a verdict on your whole life, 988 answers, and a real person picks up. And whatever this is goes to a doctor, a nurse or a pharmacist today, described plainly, including the part where you did the thing exactly as told and nothing changed.
You are holding information somebody trained genuinely wants. John 9:3 sends the attention away from fault and toward what God is doing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person from self examination to a phone call.
Tell them what you tried. Not because it was foolish, but because it is a fact about your situation and it saves them a question.
You have something useful to report and it has never once been an embarrassment. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a plain conversation about something that did not work, and what is written refuses to make a person the reason and does not replace that with an explanation.
So here is the word I came with, and it is for one person who did it properly and got nothing.
You are not the reason it did nothing, and there has never once been a fault in you to find. I am not comforting you. John 9:3 has the whole blame frame refused in one word, put to sincere people asking the most natural question there is, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who closes an investigation somebody has been running against themselves since the spring.
And this, which is the one I want left standing when the kitchen light goes off:
You have been held through the whole of this, and the holding has never once depended on anything working. The Spirit of God is the one who is present with somebody for whom nothing changed, and what is written takes the attention off the person entirely and puts it on what God is doing, without offering one word of explanation.
If you want one sentence to say out loud tonight, say this one: This did not fail because of me, and a thing that worked elsewhere and not here says nothing about who I am.
Declare this over yourself
- Question about what is different about me, you are not evidence of anything and you never were. John 9:3 answers the search for a fault with neither, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get another night, in the name of Jesus.
- Habit of moving the conversation whenever it comes near, you have no authority over my mouth. The written word refuses both of the options that were offered and does not supply a third, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished being the explanation for my own life.
- Father, You refused the whole question rather than choosing somebody to blame. Your word says neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents, so by Your Spirit I say it out loud today, and I ring somebody qualified.
